We were waiting to interview the starting line, but randy and pappas just sat down and thought it'd be funny to pretend to be the starting line.
randy: hello i'm randy.. and oh, ken vasoli.
hello
randy: i'm kenny.
pappas: i'm tom.
hi tom.
manager: this is our manager, randy nickels.
so you're starting line's manager?
guy: uhh.. oh yes, oh yes. i am randy nickels.
okay, so how'd you get with drive-thru?
randy: well um our old band sunday drive was catching on through mp3.com
and uh.. our friend charlie who owns we the people records, he gave the cd to
richard and stephanie, and richard and stephanie wanted to sign us.
have you ever had a show where the crowd was just not responding well?
pappas: yeah, one time at the TLA, when we first played there, uh in
philly.
randy: yeah, we were playing the TLA in philly. that was actually our
first show. we just snuck in and played.
how was it growing up in pennsylvania?
randy: uhh all our life, we grew up there.
and greg left you?
randy: greg's my friend. he's my friend back from middle school.
i think you're really hot.
randy: thanks. me as vasoli, or me as r2k?
uh, both.
pappas: haha, randy. that one had to get clarified.
randy: okay, let's just do the band interview now.
alrite, so tell me how you got with drive-thru.
randy: um well. i would always show drive-thru my previous band demo. and
one day, i joined their band. and they were called numb. but we changed our name
to finch.
and does finch mean anything?
randy: no, just our name. and then we called up drive-thru like 3 weeks
later and asked if we could play for them and they said yeah. so we went up and
rehearsed somethings and they fell in love with it. so..
what attracted you to drive-thru when all the bands don't really have the
same sound as you?
randy: because they're my friends and i knew they'd take care of us.
do you have a problem with sounding different than the other bands?
pappas: i think that helps us alot.
randy: it makes us stand out.
how was the video for 'letters to you'?
randy: fucking awesome.
pappas: nate got hit in the face and had to get stitches.
randy: yeah, grizzly hit him in the face.
pappas: yeah, in the last shot, we were just destroying everything. all
the guitars and everything were just being slammed in the walls and whatever.
alex came across and attacked nate with the bass and split his eyebrow open. and
then he had to get stitches.
and you still kept doing the video?
pappas: actually, that was the very last shot so it worked out.
randy: we went ape shit and broke all of our shit.
where'd you shoot the video?
pappas: uhh some creepy ass place in hollywood.
randy: some really weird haunted house in hollywood.
what's the next single being released?
randy: i don't know. we're just starting to push 'letters to you' so..
pappas: we're just winging it. we're winging it right now.
randy: hopefully we could do like a harder song. that'd be nice.
pappas: with lots of screaming and dying in it.
what's your favorite song to play live?
pappas: the album.
randy: um i like 'what it is to burn' and i also like to play 'untitled'
and when we can i like to play 'ender'. ender's always fun. we just jam out.
it's a big jam sess.
pappas: SESSS.
randy: session
what's with the 'letters to you' acoustic version?
randy: ah. yeah, we did it on a tv show.
pappas: yeah.
how'd you like doing that?
randy: i didn't do it actually. it was san diego day on warped tour. it
was just nate and derek so they just pieced it together and did it, so it's
cool.
pappas: i wasn't even there. i haven't even heard it.
randy: i haven't heard it either.
how was it working with daryl from glassjaw?
randy: it's the shit.
pappas: daryl's sick. he's an amazing performer. amazing vocalist. he's
amazing everything. he's just cool. he's a cool dude and it's great to have him
come like be on our album and work with us and be able to contribute.
randy: we actually just became friends with him. we knew him but we
became friends after. it was fun.
how was skate and surf?
randy: skate and surf was fuckin' awesome.
pappas: i was so drunk and fucked up the entire time like 3 days
straight. it was so sick.
randy: all i have to say is, the hotel across the street was a fuckin'
madhouse.
pappas: it was insane. everybody from the concert stayed there. like the
place was just nuts for 3 days.
randy: people were fucking going insane. couches were being thrown in the
hallway. brand new took a bunch of couches.. like every floor, they took all the
couches then put them all in the basement, like through the elevator.
pappas: by the end of the whole weekend, like none of the elevators
worked. there was just like shit everywhere in the hotel, it was so great.
randy: brand new is the shit dude, they're down.
pappas: yeah, they're awesome.
so when you play in california, is there the same reacton?
randy: same reaction to here, i guess. kids are awesome here. we love
playing the east coast and west coast. home and playing here is like real
close..
what about playing in the midwest?
randy: uh.. it's a little slower but they're catching on so it's awesome.
pappas: the two coasts are equally as crazy for us. like if we go on the
west coast and play it's just nuts. and when we play here, it's nuts.
randy: we always just can't wait to get either home or to the east coast.
are you excited for the upcoming new found glory headlining tour?
randy: yeah, really excited. i'm more excited of going to japan. no
actually equally excited but just to be somewhere that i haven't been, that'd be
cool.
have you played places out of the states?
pappas: we've been to canada now on warped tour. we've been uk, new found
glory took us there. and we're going going back to the uk like the day after
warped tour ends. and then we go to japan for like, what is it? like 6 shows.
how come you don't go to other asian countries, like korea?
randy: oh we'll go to korea. we'll hit korea.. we'll hit..
pappas: i wanna hit all those countries but right now people offered to
bring us over and pay for us and stuff.
randy: oh here comes your boys. start line.
so why are you called r2k?
randy: short for randall 2000. and i am a robot.
